Day 14 - Sierch Les Bains to Berquin, 250 miles.

The day started well, firing up the boxers at 0700. We kept the noise level up as the 2 Germans and 5 Czechs had kept us awake most of the night with their coughing, belching, flatulence and general demeanour and after a rendition of The Great Escape played on an Akropovic it was off we went.
First travelling through Schengen, scene of the agreement signing. After knocking out near on 100 miles on the motorway we arrived in Givet and stopped for breakfast which consisted of coffee and a pastry, an ongoing tradition on this tour.
It's always nice when travelling through this area of Europe to stop and pay respect at any number of Commonwealth Graves dotted around the area. It was sad to see 2 of my namesakes buried at the cemetery we chose at random.
Tonight's abode is a lovely little gite style place owned by a nice French man called Thierry, who even put the Union flag out for us 🇬🇧 though upside down, that was soon fixed.
Thierrys place was impeccable, looking like a clubhouse.
A little while later 3 Belgians arrived on bicycles and much merriment was had regarding the lack of a Belgian flag until Thierry appeared to correct the imbalance.

Day 14, Mazingabe to Hazebrouk 50 miles

Great start to the day with breakfast laid on by Annette. Consisting of jams, bread, croissant, cheese, ham, coffee and orange juice. Even the dog had some. We knew it may be a wet ride today so took our time, trying to dodge the drops by visiting a few Great War cemeteries and a museum. If you get the chance, visit the museum at Fromelles (Thorpe Wood) at 5 euros per adult it was very well worth it and underlines the futility of the sacrifice all those brave young men made. On leaving the museum, the rain started coming down so we took refuge in a McDonald's where we bumped into an odd Scottish biker spending a month in Europe, sleeping behind bus shelters. When the rain gave way it was off to Hazebrouck for a look around and a lunchtime beer at the Cafe de Paris. Day 2

Sad start to the day, 2 of our group headed for home 😔 300 miles of non motorway roads saw us ending up in Mulhouse, France on the border with Germany. On the way we bumped into Joan of Arcs birthplace, a jet taking off from a car park and rounded the day off with a nice meal in Mulhouse.  Getting back to the hotel, we had a beer with Jörg & Sybille, a married couple from Stuttgart riding Harleys on their touring holiday. Jörg gave us their phone number for if ever we were in their hometown. Unsure what tomorrow will bring or even which direction we're headed, possibly along the bottom of Germany toward Slovenia. UPDATE: I forgot to remove the disc lock from my front wheel and dropped the bike 😒🤣

Day 3 - Luneville to Dornstetten

189 miles today. After a bit of a scare with Marks bike looking like it may have had a leak from the rear drive. Thankfully we reckon it may have been something they sprayed on when changing tyres. So after a quick coffee in La Cervoise we were back on the road. My original plan for visiting Struthof now cancelled, it was off to Colmar for a look around the medieval city. A French town but very Germanic looking. A decision was made to target Hohencamping in Germany, a place I'd stayed at once before. By chance we happened to find a memorial at an old blockhouse of the Maginot Line. ...and after not excluding ferries from the satnav, got a free ferry across the mighty Rhine.
